What is Microneedling?

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling, or collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that uses fine needles to create micro-injuries in the skin. These tiny punctures stimulate the skin’s natural healing process, leading to the production of collagen and elastin, which are essential for maintaining skin firmness and elasticity. I’ll explain the benefits and potential side effects to help you decide if microneedling is right for you.

How Does Microneedling Work?

During the treatment, I use a professional microneedling machine to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. As the needles penetrate the skin's surface, they stimulate the body’s wound-healing process, resulting in increased collagen production. This helps improve skin texture, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and fade scars, including acne scars. The treatment is customizable, allowing me to adjust the needle depth based on the area being treated and your specific skin concerns.

What is Microneedling Good For?

Microneedling offers a range of benefits for various skin types and concerns:

  • Fading Scars: Helps fade acne scars or other types of scars by encouraging healthy skin tissue regeneration.
  • Improving Skin Texture: Reduces large pores, uneven skin tone, and rough texture, resulting in smoother, more radiant skin.
  • Enhancing Skincare Product Absorption: The micro-injuries created allow skincare products to penetrate deeper, making them more effective.
  • Reducing Fine Lines and Wrinkles: Boosts collagen production, helping to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles for a more youthful appearance.

What Are the Benefits of Microneedling?

Microneedling offers numerous benefits, including:

  • Minimal Downtime: With little to no recovery time, it’s an excellent option for those with busy schedules.
  • Versatility: It can be used on various parts of the body, including the face, neck, décolletage, and hands.
  • Suitable for All Skin Types: Safe for all skin types and tones, making it a widely accessible treatment. However, bear in mind that your skin must be adequately prepared in order to heal well and have the best results without side effects. Microneedling is not an introductory treatment.
  • Natural Results: Stimulates the skin’s natural healing process for subtle, natural-looking results.

In Calgary, I offer in-person microneedling treatments that include a complimentary three-week follow-up LED therapy session to further enhance your results and support optimal healing for my Full Cocoa Program clients.

What Are the Side Effects of Microneedling?

While microneedling is generally safe, potential side effects include:

  • Redness and Swelling: Your skin may appear red and slightly swollen after the treatment, similar to a mild sunburn. This typically subsides within a few days.
  • Minor Irritation: Some may experience minor skin irritation, such as itching or dryness, as the skin heals.
  • Bruising: Bruising can occur in rare cases, especially for those with sensitive skin. However, I’ll provide you with the necessary post-care instructions to minimize these effects and promote optimal healing.

      What’s the Recovery Process Like?

Recovery after microneedling is relatively quick. Most clients can return to their normal activities within 24 to 48 hours. During recovery, it’s essential to keep your skin hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure, and follow your prescribed aftercare routine (all microneedling clients get a custom aftercare kit after their treatment). For best results, avoid makeup and other potential skin irritants for at least 24 hours after treatment. I'll provide detailed aftercare instructions tailored to your specific needs to ensure the best outcomes.

      Does Microneedling Hurt?

Microneedling may cause some discomfort, but it’s generally well-tolerated. I apply a topical numbing cream before the procedure to minimize pain or discomfort. The sensation can vary depending on the area being treated and the depth of needle penetration, but it’s often described as a mild tingling or prickling sensation.

      How Many Treatments Are Required?

The number of microneedling sessions required depends on your skin concerns and desired results. For general skin rejuvenation, a series of 3 to 6 treatments spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart is typical. For specific concerns like deep acne scars or hyperpigmentation, additional sessions may be necessary. I’ll analyze your skin and discuss the ideal treatment plan with you during your consultation.

Microneedling vs. Microchanneling: What’s the Difference?

You might have also heard of Microchanneling, also known as Cosmetic Needling, a treatment I offer in addition to microneedling. Both are advanced treatments aimed at rejuvenating your skin, but they differ in their approach. Microneedling uses fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries deeper in the skin , while microchanneling introduces fine, surgical steel needles into the superficial skin layers. Microchanneling is generally less invasive and has a quicker recovery time, making it a great option for those with sensitive skin or those looking for a gentler alternative to microneedling. You can learn more about microchanneling and how it compares to microneedling here.

Can You Do Microneedling at Home? Is It Recommended?

While home microneedling kits are available, I generally do not recommend them. Home devices typically have shorter needles, which may not penetrate the skin deeply enough to stimulate collagen production effectively. Additionally, improper use of home microneedling devices can lead to skin damage, infection, or worsening of skin conditions. For best results and safety, I recommend seeking microneedling treatments from a licensed and experienced skin therapist, like myself, at Cocoa Esthetiques in Calgary.
